“Dear Students, Parents, Staff, Board Members, our honored VIPs, and the Community. On behalf of the Cabrillo Unified School District team, I want to personally thank everyone here, and those who could not make it, for our new campus, which is truly incredible and state of the art.
Traditional Indian medicine says that your current environment, whether it be your home, car, or the building you work in, is the outermost layer of your body and mind.
The way you feel and act is to a significant degree dictated by your environment. I have seen this medical observation play out first hand for the last month on this truly incredible and state of the art campus. Students are more engaged, motivated, and focused. Teachers and staff including myself are reenergized and invigorated. We love our new home and are honored to be here! It is a learning environment that maximizes student learning and a teaching environment that is supportive of teachers delivering instruction. It has offices that are welcoming to parents, guardians, and visitors, and it is able to support mental health services, counseling, and one-on-one tutoring. There is a Multi-Use Building that two nights ago was named the Robert King Center in honor of our friend and mentor Bob King whose life’s work laid the foundation for what we do day in and day out. It encourages students to go beyond the traditional classroom and explore learning opportunities that require team building and active participation.
There is a half-court basketball facility that has given us the opportunity for the first time in history to provide physical education. There is a quad area with picnic benches to support social interaction outdoors. Each classroom includes state of the art teaching technology; versatile, movable furniture that supports 21st century learning; and plenty of natural lighting which supports a positive mood.
High school students are working toward their diploma by taking classes like English, Geometry, Government, and Physical Science. They are playing basketball and the guitar, listening to guest speakers, and painting murals. Adult learners through La Costa Adult School are taking ESL and GED preparation courses that will improve their English speaking skills, make post secondary education more accessible, and increase their eligibility for higher paying careers. Beneath our feet is a new foundation which this community built to ensure that future generations of our community will thrive. The future is dependent on the present; what we do now is what counts. And we are off to a great start.
It is with great honor and even greater humility that I officially open the Pilarcitos High School campus and welcome you to see it in its entirety. Please explore, take the grand tour, mingle, ask questions, and enjoy your campus.”
