Fremont Fire Station No. 2

Fremont Fire Station No. 2

Fremont, CA

The city of Fremont’s new LEED Silver Certified Fire Station No. 2, located on a postage stamp-sized lot in the city’s historic Niles District, replaces the existing station long overdue for replacement. The community residents took pride in the area’s small-town feel, slower pace and low traffic volume. Due to the predominantly small retail and office tenants in the area, the community turned out in great numbers for the many design workshops expressing the need for the project to fit into the contextual fabric and to recognize the area’s rich history of current and past industries and business.

The design solution is a 2-story design with building proportions in context with other buildings along the street frontage. The exterior building materials of brick, pre-cast concrete and ceramic tile were chosen to highlight the past industries of the area. Arches over the apparatus bays doors and the window storefront are additional features which draw from the surrounding context. To recognize the area’s silent-movie film industry, exterior art panels capturing area images are placed into filmstrip templates on the building.
